The Fortune in Men's Eyes

"Hey hey, babe, I got blood in my eyes for you."

Apologies for arriving a bit late to the Is John Roberts Gay? party. I have to say the mood seems inappropriately ebullient, as usual at such occasions, when really people ought to be asking What the Hell are we doing here again?

So Bush's surprise nominee for Chief Justice played Peppermint Patty in a High School production of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown." So he married for the first time at age 41 and is a father to adopted children. So he's posed with food, and a moustache:

Even if it's all true, so what? Isn't Roberts entitled to his self-hating closet every bit as much as J Edgar Hoover and Roy Cohn were to theirs?

Here's the so what: it's the pattern recognition. It's the mercurial advancement of a far-right cadre of closeted men. It's Craig Spence, "Jeff Gannon," Victor Ashe and the Texas Velvet Mafia. It's the games of Bonesmen. It's the stories of George HW Bush. It's Kay Griggs' persuasive accounts of rampant homosexual blackmail, rape, and systemic paedophilia in the highest ranks of the US military and government. It's the Eye of Horus. As I've written, it's the fascist imagination that links ancient mystery religions and secret societies to today's imperial death cult which binds itself in blood and semen.

A public figure's private sexuality is a tough subject to broach, as it should be. But the Roberts rumours are suggestive of a still largely unacknowledged trend that needs an accounting, and should not be played for the cheap laughs which invite the disgrace of homophobia. Because these stories are not about sex, but about the secret ley lines of power in Washington and the loyalties and obligations they create. And gay, straight or whatever, that's everybody's business.

Says it right there in one of your links, right out in the open. He is "ambidextrous".
Huh? It does? Oh well.

Surprised you don't just come right out and say that Dubya's gay in your post. The Jeff Gannon story would have brought down any other president, but Dubs just seems to slide out of any situation, no matter how totally appalling and damaging and culpable it seems to be. Someone's, uh, covering his ass, ain't they? The Prexy's faaaabulous gayness (and the bonds of loyalty it enables) is an issue that has nothing to do with homophobia, as you rightly point out, and everything to do with political leverage, and as such demands focus and attention. I suggest raking through some old "ashes" before they get entirely cold?

The Truth about George W. Bush

Here you will find out the little known truth concerning President George W. Bush, Victor Ashe, the current American ambassador to Poland (formerly mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee and Exec. V.P.; C.F.O. of Fannie Mae), and their adulterous-bisexual relationship with a Las Vegas woman in 1984.

This situation took place in 1984 in the State of Tennessee. It concerns a 41 year old woman [currently residing in Las Vegas], Victor Ashe and George Bush's encounter in 1984 during the senate debates between Al Gore, Jr., Victor Ashe and Ed McAteer. She was invited to come to Tennessee by Victor Ashe. While attending one of these debates she spoke briefly with Ed McAteer (Senatorial candidate in 1984 who debated alongside Al Gore, Jr. and Victor Ashe, and was responsible in part for the emergence of the Religious Right).

Members of the mainstream media (CNN, FOX/news, Chicago Tribune) have known about this Las Vegas woman [well known in the BDSM underground] since September of 2003 yet they have done little if anything to get to the bottom of it. Like Bush's national guard service records they've given him a free pass concerning the what, where and when of his participation in the Texas Air National Guard.

We believe if the whereabouts and war-time behavior of Senator Kerry during his tour in Vietnam in the early 70's are matters of importance to the American people [according to Sinclair Broadcasting and Swift Boat Vets for Truth] then the past behavior of this President and his involvement in a homosexual situation with another man in the mid 80's is of equal importance.

When this Las Vegas woman told us about her conversation with Ed McAteer we thought it was something that should be looked into. He was being treated for cancer so we had to move quickly to open a dialogue. We believed obtaining a death bed declaration [if it came down to that] of a man of Ed McAteer's stature in the Christian community [he was called the Godfather of the Religious Right] would have held tremendous weight. Ed [finally] coming forward to say what he witnessed or knew concerning this matter would have been unimpeachable. Ed was a staunch supporter of the state of Israel and quietly lobbied for the post of U.S. ambassador to Israel back in 2001 but was turned down for the position by none other than George W. Bush. It seems in George W. Bush's isolated bubble, ambassadorships are rewards set aside for friends and lovers only.

We initially contacted Mr. McAteer back in May of this year. He mentioned at that time Victor Ashe's sexual shenanigans were no secret in Tennessee. He seemed resentful of his party's choice to back a 'sodomite' which is why he ran as an independent. Ed was on chemotherapy and it was extremely difficult for him to talk so we deferred until late August at which time his wife [Faye] informed us he wanted to talk further but was under doctors orders to refrain from all strenuous activity. Sadly, Ed McAteer passed away on Oct. 5, 2004, before we could do a follow-up interview, he was 78. For Ed's sake [and that of his family] we hope his departure was natural [God's will], however, the timing of it all seems rather untimely in our opinion. It bares looking into by the Tennessee authorities.

When he passed way another writer contacted Faye and she imparted to him that Ed seemed upset upon returning from the debate in Chattanooga back in 1984. Was Ed aware of Victor Ashe and George W. Bush's bisexual behavior? Perhaps that is what upset him so.

Unfortunately he didn't get the chance to tell us what he witnessed that night that upset him or if he remembered talking with the Las Vegas woman.

The Las Vegas woman was paid $15,000 to arrange sexual liaisons involving bisexual men for George W. Bush (then private citizen) and Victor Ashe (then a Tennessee State Senator). These adulterous bisexual affairs (3 encounters in all-3 different cities) took place in the state of Tennessee during the 1984 senate debates between, Al Gore, Jr., Victor Ashe and Ed McAteer. An African-American woman was invited to participate in this adulterous sexual encounter with George W. Bush and Victor Ashe immediately following the Chattanooga senatorial debate. This woman was paid $1,500. A few years later the Las Vegas woman was detained in Washington D.C. with Victor Ashe by the Metro D.C. police. She was released but Victor was taken into custody.

So confident was this woman that Ed would have remembered her [and their meeting] she had finally come forward and was prepared to tell it all. She will swear to the authenticity of what is being imparted here, which is the reason that we built this website so we could get this information out to you.

Bush & Co. will no doubt tell the world she's insane, politically motivated thus concocting this for smear reasons. She is of sound mind and body and welcomes all inquires from the mainstream media. This woman deeply laments not having come forward back in 2000 when then Governor Bush was running for the highest office in the land against [ironically] Vice President Al Gore, Jr.

Disclosure of George W. Bush's adulterous bisexual behavior will only happen if the American public demand answers. Contact your local news organizations demanding that this truth be revealed and not go the way of his Texas Air National Guard records.

This is a little OT, but it has a point.

Our area got hit by a wicked thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. The power went out around 5 pm EST.

As the hours wore on, I thought a lot about the Katrina victims. It is amazing how much anxiety one feels in the darkness, when there is no way to communicate with the outside world. My neighbor called me, and asked if I had a battery operated radio. Nope. Still have not gone to the survival supply store. We castigated each other, talked about old times, and killed about an hour before hanging up.

Finally, I decided to have fun, alone as I was, with the darkness and my imagination.

I lit a half-dozen tea lights and a joss stick. The sweet smell of musk was dizzying in the cool night air. I listened to the sounds of the night and felt myself relax into it.

With the candles flickering, and the joss stick smoldering, I was moved to self-indulgence: a little toking, a few slugs of good Canadian Whiskey, and a quart of Edy's Butter Pecan ice cream. (*Well, it was going to melt, I reasoned, so why not eat it? It took a deliciously long time to do so!)

Then, I got out my portable CD player and put on some favorite MP3's. When the clouds finally parted, revealing the full moon, in all Her glory, I put on Loreena McKennitt's The Visit , and howled. (I have very tolerant neighbors). It was a cathartic experience.

Sometime during the night, the power came back on.

This morning, I set about resetting everything that runs on a clock. Then, I made coffee, sitting down in front of the computer as I usually do, on Sunday mornings. After reading my favorite comic strip, I clicked on RI, saw THE EYES, recoiled, and slopped hot coffee all over my dressing gown. (Jeff, do you pay cleaning bills? ;-) )

I'll say this: Roberts is a weird-ass sonuvabitch, gay or straight.

It's worth mentioning the opposite reactions to Roberts, from Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein:

Feinstein:
"I don't think there's anybody on the court quite like he will be," she said, describing him as "very impressive" and exuding "humility and modesty."

Boxer:
[I will] "use all the parliamentary tools I've been given as a U.S. senator" to delay a vote on Roberts if necessary, stopping just short of threatening a filibuster.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/08/19/MNGOBEA9JK1.DTL

Women's reproductive rights are, clearly, the main battleground with Roberts -- just as it is with every conservative nominee. There is no room for moderate viewpoints on this issue! It is, therefore, disingenuous for any Democratic senator, especially a woman, to support JR's nomination.

As folks here have observed, the Dems have lost their base. They don't care about women's rights, or the poor, or anything that challenges their move toward GOP-Light. So f*ck them! I won't vote for another Democrat until someone in the Party figures this one out.

Well, I'm awake now. Off to get a fresh cup of coffee, far away from the horrible vision of blood in the eyes.

This sucks, if you'll pardon the pun. I'm bisexual...so don't look to me for gay bashing. These stories always make me uncomfortable because the idea of a "homosexual" conspiracy is clearly rightwing fundy fodder. I wish that meant it wasn't true...but this pattern is simply too clear. I don't think you mentioned Craig Spence and the "Call Boy" scandal.

The one thing it shows clearly is not that gay men are dangerous as a rule...they most certainly are not...but closeted gay men...that's another story. Repressed men in general, as of the fundamentalist variety, are likely to take out their desires in other ways...often fascistic.

I just read today a story of sexual abuse in various Madrasses in Pakistan. It's like the Catholic abuse scandal only these boys go to these Islamic schools to live as well as study, so they are more at risk.

In any event, I still don't believe in outing people UNTIL they start attacking gays themselves...then it's gloves off.

It's bad enough that we have lesbian nazi dykes wondering our Colleges and Universites looking to turn the average Canadian family into a twisted world of divide and conquer and that they are trying and make those who like tradition feel as if they are the evil passer's. Now new laws being written will put those very people that pray for tradition can be thrown into jail for not creating an atmosphere of acceptance if say your daughter Suzi tell's you she decided to become gay when you hoped she would carry on the family name and give you some grandchildren she can now give you the finger while they throw away the key. Homosexuality is a selfish attitude that build's everything around it based on that lustful lifestyle. If you can't make nature bow to you than the very laws of nature are to be overcome. By consent or conquest and if God don't like a man shoving sperm into another man's fertilized feces then God and the man God helped create must go. Hail satan.

2 It's about power and hidden control.
If we keep those precepts in mind, this may stay on track.

Taken when he was at Yale circa 1976 he sports a violet-mauve shirt under a white sweater, sort of a page boy hair do -- and stands in front of a Christmas tree.

Morgan, you summed it up well with "I'll say this: Roberts is a weird-ass sonuvabitch, gay or straight."

I haven't watched Roberts because I can't watch these people, I have to read it because if I watch them my blood pressure skyrockets and I'm trying to stay off meds. But I did accidentally catch a few shots of him and my first thought was, I haven't seen such obviously loony eyes since that runaway bride.

The photo of him with the number with the 'stache, however, caused my gaydar alarm to go off so loudly it broke.

Dream's End, YOU summed it up perfectly by saying it's not that he's gay, it's that he's a closeted gay, and in the old days we used to call that "living a lie." And it's hard to trust someone who is so good at living one lie that they're not living others. On the other hand, few gay men are as lucky as one of my colleagues in Cleveland who, all the way back in 1981 with Ray-gun in the White House found an otherwise 'mainstream' law firm where he could be openly gay and bring his boyfriend to firm events. The irony was that while he was doing this, another gay friend who was a theatrical director and college faculty member felt he had to marry his lesbian best friend in order to keep his career from being stalled due to the conservatism in Cleveland (where one of the top directors and his longtime live-in lover were named every year as "Most Eligible Bachelors" and pretended they just hadn't 'met the right woman.')

Dream's End has the right of it: it's the worship of fascism that seems to go hand in hand with repressed homosexuality that is relevant. The idea of Georgie Girl the cheerleader and "Peppermint Johnny" reminds me of something out of "The Damned", the film by Luchino Visconti...the scene of Ernst Roehm's Sturmabteilung (Storm Division, whose members were known as stormtroopers or brownshirts) cavorting in homosexual, transvestic abandon before they were gunned down at Bad Wiessee in 1934 by the SS on Hitler's orders (the "Night of the Long Knives ").

"With an SS escort detachment the Führer drove to Bad Wiessee and knocked softly on Röhm's door: “Message from Munich,” he said with disguised voice. “Well come in,” Röhm called to the supposed messenger, “the door is open.” Hitler tore open the door, fell on Röhm as he lay in bed, seized him by the throat and screamed, “You are under arrest, you swine.” Then he turned the traitor over to the SS. At first Röhm refused to get dressed. The SS then threw his clothes in the Chief of Staff's face until he bestirred himself to put them on. In the room next door, they found young men engaged in homosexual activity. “And these are the kind who want to be leaders in Germany,” the Führer said trembling."

Hitler of course had had no trouble using Roehm and the SA to gain power. The US seems to have gone Nazi Germany one better by putting crypto-fascist crypto-queers at the head of both the Executive and Judicial branches.

Swell.

Let me make it clear that I am not homophobic. Were Roberts openly gay and qualified for the position of Chief Justice I would probably think his playing Peppermint Patty was cute. (Imagine Harvey Fierstein on the court--Clarence "Uncle" Thomas and Tony "Soprano" Scalia would just plotz.)

But there's still those eyes.

I could be kind and suggest Graves' Disease--anyone know if he has had to produce medical records and if so if he is hyperthyroid? But it's not just that the eyes bug out, it's that the look in them is bughouse.

For me the biggest issue with Roberts is not that the "Head" Cheerleader nominated him--Our Fuehrer is a classic sociopath who always pushes the boundary as far as he can, he gets off on getting away with, well, murder. What I don't get is why the DumboQuisling's acquiesces isn't widely accepted to be the death of the party. Oh, it's been walking wounded since Gore conceded. But if they think there will ever be a more appropriate time to stop collaborating, they're not just cowardly, deluded, or cowardly and deluded, they are evil and anyone who looks to them for protection IS already finished.

As J. J. Hunsecker said to Sidney Falco in "The Sweet Smell of Success", so I say to the party of FDR as a whole: "You're dead, son. Go get yourself buried."

Ley lines of power, indeed.

Male alliances are a funny thing. On the basic chimpanzee level, it's easy for women to form alliances, support groups, social networks comprising themselves and their children. But men are far more competitive. They can form alliances of convenience or set up hierarchical pecking orders, but it's really hard for powerful alpha males to overcome their innate antagonisms and establish dependable social bonds.

One way men have traditionally established alliances is through marrying each other's sisters or daughters. Even though the anthropologists seem to think marriage was invented by women as a means to insure more successful child-raising, the evidence for that is fairly flimsy. It seems far more likely to me that it arose as part of a male-to-male system of reciprocal obligations.

But the ancient system of marital alliances has been breaking down over the last few centuries. Modern societies are just too complex, too mobile, too dispersed to rely on anything that small-scale and personal.

That breakdown has made possible a whole range of innovative ways for people to arrange their intimate relationships without worrying about the political ramifications. But it may also have created a crisis in how powerful men establish their aliances with other powerful men.

A variety of possible alternative mechanisms come to mind: Direct sex with one another. Shared sex with a clearly subordinate third party or parties. And perhaps the whole range of criminal sexual activities that have been discussed here.

All of these -- especially those which are most forbidden -- would create powerful bonds through a sort of mutual blackmail and shame. Throw in some secret-society mumbo-jumbo to ensure that the connection will be life-long, and you have the makings of a coalition.

If this is so, than closeted gay sex would not be merely a by-product of self-hating conservative gays. It would be an essential part of the bonding among highly competitive alpha males.

Continuing this line of thought, it occurs to me that we wouldn't have so many goddamned buddy movies if male bonding weren't in crisis. Societies don't tell stories about the things that are working smoothly -- they tell them about the problems they're desperately trying to solve.

It may be particularly significant that the buddy scenarios tend to involve pairings so disparate that it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine them marrying one another's sisters -- blacks and whites, humans and Vulcans, dwarves and elves . . .

I'm not an expert on slash fiction, but it seems conceivable to me that the genre could ultimately have more to do with the crisis of male bonding in a pluralistic society than with the sexual fantasies of adolescent girls.

starroute,

Doesn't the "buddy film" go back decades? And as for the idea that there was healthy male bonding in the past...wasn't most of the bonding done in the military or quasi-military organizations, kinda just like today? (Or their sublimated versions, sports teams).

For an interesting take on the link between rightwing ideology and homosexuality, how about that Mishima Yukio, eh? Body building emperor worshipper with gay paramilitary outfit, hoping to spark a revolution in the army to restore the emperor as divine, takes over military office circa 1970, commits hari kari, his lover botches the coup de grace--from what I understand from a Japanese-American acquaintance now living, the Japanese still can't wrap their minds around that so it isn't talked about. I think he said the Paul Schrader film has never been released in Japan (the film is flawed but worth a look and the Philip Glass score is sublime).

Re: slash, I'm 40 years from being a teenager, and I'd vastly rather have watched Aragorn and Legolas lock lips than Ledger and Gyllenhall, but the Tolkien estate would have sued. So what's left but to read slash? ;) (Seriously I DO have to wonder what it is about our society's view of WOMEN that inspires teen girls to write jockstrap rippers instead of bodice rippers, by the way. Teen girls used to imagine being swept off their feet by the handsome prince, now they imagine him boinking an elf. Is someone studying this?)

Does the denial of homoerotic feelings in men, especially young men, end up turning to perverse sexuality and violence? Is pedophilia, or ephebophilia, a form of stunted emotional growth where instead of exploring those feelings in their own childhood and teen years, men grow up still fixated on playing with a little boy weenie or romancing the high school football hero? If not for the taboo on such exploration, might the majority of men either realize they are in fact het or settle into a self accepting bisexuality or gayness, and not have to seek out youthful males, or join all-male situations where they can be in that high testosterone all male pressure cooker and attribute any eruptions of those feelings to the stress of the situation?

I have never forgotten a friend from high school who claimed to be 100% het telling me once after a few beers that the only person he had ever truly LOVED was his best friend and football team-mate in high school and that "If Rich had been a woman I would have married him." I'm not making any nickel-shrink reductive assumptions about his 'real'sexuality, only that, in conjunction with his statement that the happiest time of his life was playing high school football, I found that a profoundly sad comment. And this was not a 'dumb jock' but a brilliant guy who graduated from Dartmouth, went to med school, and became an oncologist (after med school he married a nurse, I have no idea if he finally found a woman who compared to Rich, or what kind of marriage they have.)

Cassandra -

The buddy film does go back a few decades, but no more than that. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has to have been one of the first, and that was 1969.

The two-men-one-woman configuration of that film seems significant as well -- remember Grace Slick singing "Why can't we go on as three?" (And yeah, I know it was a David Crosby song, but it was Grace's version that got issued, and that was 1968.)

I just can't remember any buddy films before the late 60's. There were lone heroes. There were heroes with sidekicks. There were parties of half a dozen or so. But I mean -- just try to visualize John Wayne in a buddy movie. Or Humphrey Bogart. Or Jimmie Cagny. Or even someone a bit later, like Marlon Brando. The very thought is laughable.

The buddy movie arose in the late 60's as a response to a specific need -- having to do with the collapse of traditional images of masculinity -- and it was tangled up in ambiguous sexuality from the start. (There was some psychedelic gay Western of the late 60's that I'm not coming up with the title of but which I thought was very funny at the time. I think the ads showed two guys riding a horse.)

And, of course, George W. Bush graduated from Yale in 1968 -- so the time frame all fits.

Isn't it amazing that people will post their comments that run longer than the original piece and not absorb any of the essential facts? The commentor who calls this "gay bashing" is a great example. This has nothing to do with bashing gays. That's like saying that Hitler was bad because he was bisexual. No one is saying that. When you look into the practices of these luciferian illumanati's, you should realize that.

When I first read about Roberts' clearly unethical secret meetings with Rove, Gonzales, Cheney and Card about the Supreme Court job while sitting on the three-judge panel that eventually allowed Bush to resume the use of military officers to conduct trials of terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, I was struck by how much like the mafia these guys are: nice guy Roberts had to soil himself with something truly despicable as a part of his initiation.
This post and the illuminating commentary from many of you suggest a bit different interpretation: the coin required to gain admission into the upper echelons of this ruling cabal subject all of them to blackmail and exploitation at any time, and bind them together in the maintenance of secrets that flow from the personal to the political without any real delineation.

I apologize if I'm thread-jacking here -- but a lot of stuff has been falling together for me in the course of posting and it seems important to get it all said.

I think the phrase that popped out of nowhere in my last post -- "the collapse of the traditional image of masculinity" -- is the key to most of what has been going on with the right wing in the last 35 years. I think it's what the "culture wars" have really been about and why the right has been able to take over this country even though poll after poll shows that most people agree with liberal principles.

The people who have led the right-wing revolution are, for the most part, what you might call anti-hippies. They were born between about 1940 and 1955, they were young adults or teenagers in the 1960's and early 70's -- but they feared and hated everything the 60's stood for.

Not all conservatives hated the 60's. The libertarian conservatives didn't. But the traditionalist conservatives did -- and these are the people we are having to contend with today.

And why did the traditionalists hate the 60's? Well, in the words of the sage, they hated us for our freedom. They feared losing control. The were afraid that if they ever took a single toke on a joint, they would immediately run off and do everything they secretly wanted to do -- and be destroyed by it.

And almost all of those secret desires were related to sex -- or at the very least, to gender. They were afraid of indulging in every weird, perverted impulse they'd ever had. They were afraid they would want to make love to other men. They were afraid that if they ever let go they'd find they were unwilling to be good husbands and breadwinners and spend the next 40 years slaving to bring home the bacon for their frigid wives and ungrateful children.

(Understand that I'm speaking here not of actual wives and children but of the 1950's stereptypes that much of the 60's represented a reaction against.)

So instead of turning to love, they turned to violence. And war. And hatred.

Along with buddy films, the late 60's brought a significance increase in the level of movie violence. The Wild Bunch was also 1969 -- and there the ritualized violence of the classic Western, which had been largely telegraphed in terms of fist fights and bloodless gunshots, suddenly started bleeding all over the screen.

Look around you, highlight everything that looks like a last-ditch attempt to defend a grotesque caricature of traditional masculinity (from elective wars to anti-gay hysteria), and you will have outlined the crisis of the last 35 years.

The real problem is, of course, that the old image can't simply be rejected (as was done in the 60's) -- it has to be replaced.

Anthropologists tell us that women come by their sense of identity naturally, because they get it from their mothers, while men have to construct their identities painstakingly as they reach adolescence. An awful lot of human practices -- from secret societies to harsh initiation rites -- are related to this piece-by-piece construction of male identity.

What do men do in our society that makes them men? What can they do that doesn't involve killing but also isn't a weak imitation of female nurturing? What qualities of initiative, leadership, creativity, and imagination are quintessentially male?

And how can that be hooked up to a new politics that transcends both liberal and conservative?

Heya Cassie! It's wonderful to see your sense of humor coming out these days. RE:Imagine Harvey Fierstein on the court :D

(BTW - I've enjoyed your recent name morphing game. What fun! Although, your creative efforts have not influenced the myriad anonymouses!)

I agree with you about the collaborators - "cowardly and deluded". It's time for them to pounce, but they're still playing nice-nice. No spines in the whole crowd. Or, those with spines are afraid to speak up.

Consider the identity problems the junior party members must be having, what with a role model like Bill Clinton! "Am I the only person in America who likes John Kerry and Geore Bush"?

Starroute:
Anthros are more likely to say that the reasons for marriage in both industrial societies and hunter gatherer, tribal societies, are the same: 1) sustaining and strengthening kinship ties 2) enforcing the sexual division of labor 3) improving both individual and group economics.

Marriage as a legal institution became more important as human beings invented agriculture, and moved away from subsistence economies. With the accumulation of wealth and private property, men needed to know which of their offspring was going to inherit their chunk of the earth.

Also, you said: "I just can't remember any buddy films before the late 60's". I see someone came up with the obvious answers.

For those who complain we're way off topic - John Roberts is a lousy choice for Chief Justice. However, he will be confirmed. All of this has already been determined - by TPTB. The staged protests by Dem collaborators is not fooling this old Wolf.

For those who are annoyed with the long threads, this is not DU or DKos, where people seem to speak in code. Here, we tend to engage in the old-fashioned Socratic Method, which is, by nature, conversational. That's what sets RI apart. :) If you are so impatient, take Pete's advice and use the scroll bar.

I know what's most dangerous.

Self appointed censors who think they're the judge of what should and shouldn't be written, what is or isn't relevant, who does or doesn't know what they're talking about. If you aren't interested in a post, stop reading. If you think it's off topic, skip it and make your on topic post. If you think someone's wrong or uninformed, correct them.

I also am tired of these pronunciamentos coming from people who remain anonymous, who cannot even take responsibility for their words to the point of establishing a consistent point of reference for others who want to respond to them beyond a time.

Warning: what follows is not 'off topic' to me, it's all related, but it doesn't mention John Roberts. SO if that ain't yer cup of tea, horseman pass by.

It isn't just masculinity that gets exaggerated in fascism, in Nazism it was Aryan appearance. The idea was the tall, strong, blonde, blue eyed, square jawed handsome male--when most of the Nazi leaders were small, dark, ugly men who, if a eugenics program got hold of them, would have eliminated them from the gene pool right quick. Many were also sexual perverts, not simply gay (which I am NOT classing as a perversion!) Those of you who have read about Hitler--well, let's not go into what he was into, but it was pretty sick, poor Geli Raubal.

To be honest, my first thought about the comment that 'buddy movies' were a recent phenomenon was "Laurel and Hardy" :D. But I do agree, and I think it's pretty well accepted by cinema historians, that there is a particular type of film which portrayed the bond between the two men as stronger and more important than either of their bonds with women that is a development dating from the late sixties or so, around the time that hippies were saying it was OK for men to be gentle and sensitive, AND women's liberation was saying it was OK for women not to be. A very complex time, and I certainly do not think it is at all irrelevant to the analysis of the psyches of men like, say, David Horowitz, who started out a liberal and later did a 180.

It's very complicated, what happened to gender roles in this country, and how it impacted and still impacts politics. Some branches of the right might as well adopt the slogan "kinder, kuche, kirche"--children, cooking, church--for the sphere they want to return women too. The belief that a woman should fit this mold and the belief that Roe v. Wade should be repealed are not separable. Many openly gay men who do not like the government telling them what to do with their bodies (ie, jailing them for sodomy) are natural allies of women who do not want to be told what to do with their wombs. On the other hand, a man who pretends to be straight, who marries a woman who agrees to be a 'cover' and ignore his male lovers...what kind of view of women must such a person have? I know someone could make the argument that the woman gets something too--a husband and the support and status he gives her, children (even if adopted) so that it's really a bargain between two equals, not one person taking advantage of the other. Perhaps if the man is honest with his WIFE this is true, but I've known women who suddenly found out their marriage was a sham and they were devastated (to be fair, I've known two men who after many years of marriage were told by their wives that they had always been lesbians.)

I didn't think it mattered if Bill Clinton liked to get blow jobs from zaftig young women in the Oval Office as long as he didn't lie about it when asked. I do think it matters in a man who will be making decisions that affect of the most important issues a woman can face whether or not he pretends to be a happily married heterosexual man when he is a closeted gay man and pretends even with his own wife. I'm not saying that's the case with Roberts, but if it was, I think it would be relevant to his fitness to rule on cases involving women's rights. Just as I would want to know if he kept a black slave who called him "Massa" behind closed doors and was ruling on issues affecting black people.

In short I think that progressives would have every right to send investigative journalists and private investigators to dig out every single detail of Roberts' life before he is given one of the most critical positions in the country which he could possibly hold for THIRTY YEARS. And I have no problem 'outing' closet queens and not only those who ally themselves with homophobes, anyone who 'lives a lie' in that area and so is comfortable with the PROCESS of lying and immune to guilt for doing it.

By the way, I keep forgetting to ask--where did that photo of Roberts with Mr. 'Stache come from?

From The Bolton Precedent

"Never before has a judge been pushed upward with such rash haste. The idea that a president with plummeting popularity should have carte blanche to appoint any closet reactionary he likes is absurd. We don't want a pig in a poke for chief justice. Give us a nominee for the Supreme Court with a track record. Give us a nominee with enough opinions out there so that we know who it is that is actually going to control every aspect of all of our lives for the rest of all of our lives. Tell your senators that if Roberts gets the job IT WILL SURELY COST THEM THEIR OWN. They will get the message and we will win."

"We stopped Bolton and everyone thought it was a miracle. It was not. We generated 30,000 emails opposing Bolton, each to two senators. And we're going to stop Roberts, all we have to do is believe. It is said that evil can only prevail when good people do nothing."

Although I am homsexual myself, I do think there is something that should alarm people going on here. What I suspect is that homosexual politicians who are not 'out' are easily susceptible to manipulation. It would obviously make sense for those who wish to control the public sphere to be able to manipulate public figures. However, in the last resort, does it matter what situation permits an individual to be manipulated, whether its greed, an excessive attachment to the state of Israel or any other motive? In short, does it really matter whether Bush, Rove, Roberts, Gannon and whoever are homosexual? Shouldn't we judge them by the fact that they are, from the standpoint of a healthy nation, appalling failures?

Also, you said: "I just can't remember any buddy films before the late 60's". I see someone came up with the obvious answers.

Only those were all comedy teams -- ultimately derived from vaudeville acts consisting of a straight man and a comic. And as far as movies were concerned, the genre had pretty well died out by the point when Martin and Lewis broke up -- which, as I recall, was around 1956. (Yeah, I'm old enough not only to remember, but to have felt sad when it happened.)

I'm willing to acknowledge "The Odd Couple" (1965) as a sort of evolutionary missing link between vaudeville-based comedy and the buddy movie. But that play was significant precisely because it introduced the sort of sexual ambiguities that had not been there in the vaudeville teams.

Some significant changes really did go down between about 1965 and 1969, and there's no way to define them out of existence.

Some context.
Closeted homosexuality was the fuel that kept the British Empire on track.
It was an assembly line, with young boys fed into boarding schools where they became "fags". Then off into the Empire knowing they could be ruined and imprisoned if they resisted their orders.
Victoria was the pervert (did you know that lesbianism was NEVER illegal?)
Then in 1967 David Steel led the campaign for legalisation and was succesful. From that point in time you find the phenomena noted AND the expansion of paedophilia.
The American Empire IS the British Empire (rebranded) and this Roberts business is business as usual.

And no, it's NOT a crisis of masculinity. It's a crisis of femininity.

Dear Morgan,

Of course, you are completely correct and well-meaning.

But there's an even bigger reason why Democrats should go to the mat to stop this nomination -- the NOLA Disaster and the military state it portends.

Our founder's have been checked! Checks and balances don't work with all branches controlled by a military-industrial cabal. The Congressional Dems' pathetic call for a 911-style commission to investigate NOLA has been stomped to death (even though if public pressure builds, no doubt they're strategically willing to allow such a toothless exercise -- at least that's what Dick Morris wrote on one of their web sites).

Anyone who has eyes knows W's gang prevented food, water, medical care, volunteer firemen and morticians, evacuation, etc., etc., etc.* -- in hopes that they could spark 'civil insurrection' so -- the Army Times wrote -- that the locked and loaded troops could invade NOLA, a "little Somalia" and stomp out the "insurgency" with M-16s pointed door-to-door.

Bush solution -- have Rove in charge of passing out billions of pork to 'rebuild' and increase W's power to impose military 'rule' in our cities.

Read the news -- these people are so corrupt and unpopular, they would lose control of Congress in the next election. Surely then they face prosecution, jail and impeachment. They 'ain't gonna let that happen.'

The only leverage Congressional Democrats have is to hold the court-packing W dreams hostage. The ransom demand -- a special independent criminal prosecutor with commitment (and penalties for violating) that the White House will not try to thwart subpoenas.

If we don't stop this fascist train now, they've got much worse in store for our 'home' land.

Our Congressional Democratic pols should check out how nicely the Ceasers treated the Senators -- to stiffen their spines to take up the great burden that is theirs at this moment.

please be brave -- we must practice virtue and avoid falling into hate even in the face of the terrible atrocities being committed in our names.

*PS -- Jeff, I've not had chance to hunt it down. But I heard on Air America on Sunday (if memory serves), an account of over a thousand [didn't catch the exact number] infants being taken from their mothers during the 'evacuation' out of NOLA and shipped to different locales. To date -- according to the spokesperson fron organization focusing on missing and exploited children -- hundreds of babies have not been returned to their parents!

NOLA was an exercise in Ethnic Cleansing. An enormous criminal calamity that Demands Justice.

I hope to god you regulars railing against the anonymous posters aren't talking about the above, which I posted. I'm FourthBase on the board. I wasn't calling for censorship, I wasn't trying to chill the discussion. I am actually concerned for us, good people whose inquisitive natures lead us to read about despicable people, their evil ideals, and the horrific things they inflict. Reading about evil can have an inadvertent impact, it introduces barbaric things to our consciousness that decent human beings ought never to have to face. I exhort everyone to be vigilent against letting these evil things seep into your own mind. We know more about the evil-doers than anyone in the world except the evil-doers themselves. We have to be careful not to start sympathizing with them in the slightest way whatsoever, unless it's a satire or something. They might have designed things so that people who are merely reading about their twisted deeds can be manipulated, disheartened, disempowered. Be vigilent, never stop hating them, never stop fighting them.

As for Roberts, haven't we all the impression that the overwhleming majority of elite white males are closeted deviants? Mind you, I'm not calling homosexuality deviance. But cheating on your wife and kids with men is. Persecuting fellow homosexuals is.

And that is the truth!

But in the name of levity, I feel compelled to add to the male buddy list:

The Three Muskateers
Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
The Lone Ranger and Tonto
The Cisco Kid and Pancho
Luke and Bo Duke
Jon and Ponch (CHiPs)
Marshall Matt Dillon and Chester
Bret and Bart Maverick
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ;)

If there were any female buddies, it was generally assumed they must be lesbians. I remember a lot of criticisms among co-workers of the movie "Julia" when it was first released at the theaters. While it was agreed that it was a powerful film, there were many comments made that asserted Lillian Hellman and Julia had to have been lesbians because women just don't risk their lives for their female friends unless there's something else going on.

With that attitude, it is no small wonder that Antiaristo's observation is so on target. And why women are their own worst enemy in many ways.

I agree with the poster who said that this has nothing to do with anyone being gay. It has to do with packing the courts with judges that are loyal to the Bush administration and neocons so that if any legal issues come up in the future that could hurt this administration, they will have the protection of the court. And if they have something on the judges (such as pretending to be a straight, upstanding family man in order to impress their religious right-wing base), then all the better for blackmailing purposes.

By the way, I think one of the reasons there are so many new and anonymous posters these days is because they're coming here from a link in the "Voice of the White House" site

See:

I've been lurking on Jeff's site for a long time and it's become one of my frequented sites that I go to for a different viewpoint of things.

I also go to the "Voice of the Whitehouse" on a regular basis because it's entertaining and it gives me hope that the Bush administration is in chaos and is going to go down eventually. However, I have no idea if it's legitimate or not.... Hasn't this been discussed before here?

In any case, thanks for all your efforts, Jeff.

Bingo, you are someone other than Anonymous and you are no more, or less, easy to trace by nefarious forces wanting to do so than if you use the "Anonymous" button.

I honestly don't know if Jeff can track by IP number. Many boards can, in order to prevent the same person from registering more than once and doing trollish things like responding to their own posts. Some sites' IP bans mean if you come on again with the same puter, you can't even get to the site to read, let alone post there. Other sites still let you read but not post. And some sites don't really care if you have more than one posting persona; I've been on boards where most posters were the equivalent of Multiple Personality patients and had different posting IDs for different moods, all done in a spirit of fun.

Sometimes I get the feeling there are people on here who have never posted on net message boards before coming here. Picking a name is simply standard procedure and often reflects the type of board--go check out a Tolkien fan site, for example, and see all the ILuvLegolas's and FrodoIs/IsntGay's.

cassandra,
The fagging system was employed in most public schools (used by the upper class). When a boy entered at 13 he was assigned to an older boy. All discipline within the house was handled by the senior boys (aged seventeen to nineteen).
Do you recall Tom Brown's Schooldays? It really was like that.
The public schools were always notorious breeding grounds for homosexuality. It is only now that it all makes sense to me.

though this question may just get lost in this thread...speaking somewhat on topic and also of films, i couldn't help thinking of RI the other day when i watched the Lemony Snicket film: A Series of Unfortunate Events. has anyone seen this? i really know next to nothing about the author or the book series it is based on. my sometimes rigorous intuition was working overtime to understand the symbology. i have no indictment per se but the combination of the secret society, murder, creepy Uncle Olaf and the omnipresent eyes (of Horus?)...wowsers!

antiaristo,

No, not familiar with Tom Brown's Schooldays but will google it. So you're saying each group of boys was indoctrinated into the system in turn, then as they got older they had their own boys. All I really know about that system was from the movie "Another Country" with Kim Philby/Rupert Everett cuddling up to Colin Firth (forget who he was), and then turning into a spy.

Seems to me "Skull and Bones" is a secret version of the system that was open in the English schools. What always struck me about Bones is that they would tell each other their sexual secrets which gave them all blackmail material on one another should someone later decide to defect. Of course, I have always wondered if John Kerry's antiwar activities were not an assignment from Bones, to infiltrate 'the other side'...a dirty job that someone had to do because if the antiwar sentiments grew, having someone who was actually an insider who had the cred with the left would be invaluable. My suspicion of him would have been less if instead of refusing to talk about Bones he had repudiated it.

Since Roberts is Harvard not Yale he isn't Bones but is there an equivalent secret society at Harvard Miss Thing might have been a recruit for?

One last question...why are public schools actually private and arsy versy in Old Blighty?

On another note, while searching for stuff on Roberts I found this blog of "news, gossip, and colorful commentary about the federal judiciary." 2) People in power are not subjects to the laws, constraints, strictures, of the lower classes. They soon perceive that anything goes, they are invulnerable, untouchable. They can do as they please...

3) When Gvmt. in a Western country becomes corrupt, or more precisely a crony-ist, nepotistic system, where money and influence and personal relations count more than votes, expertise, experience, probity, etc., it is inevitable that sexual ‘deviants’ (I don’t much like that term but hope it is correctly understood in the context of this post) rise to the top. As do others whose first aim is to prey on other people - gangsters, Maffyia types, etc.

If I understood Jeff's post right,
he's saying the guy w/the moustache is Roberts - he's the one on the left.

Check out more on this very funny story at a good site...
